The Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all.

One is Evil.
It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good.
It is joy, peace , love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:
"Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

US Payrolls Fall Again...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers unexpectedly cut jobs in February at the steepest rate in nearly five years, a second straight month of employment losses that heightened fears the world's largest economy has skidded into recession.

"The question appears no longer to be are we going into a recession but how long and deep it will be," said economist Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors Inc in Holland, Pennsylvania.

The Labor Department on Friday said 63,000 nonfarm jobs were eliminated on top of an upwardly revised loss of 22,000 in January, sharply contrary to Wall Street economists' forecasts that 25,000 positions would be added in February. For the rest of this story:

When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied :

"We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long ways to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as 'Americans'."

Does Size Matter?

I heard an interesting radio debate the other day, about how the US would react in response to aggression, taking into consideration the difference in land masses. A country like Israel, pound for pound, can hold their own with just about any country in the world, despite their size. Over many years the US has nominated itself as "the world's top cop". We insert ourselves pretty much anywhere we deem necessary, or I would say in some cases, not necessary. If the tables were turned and it was us that were on the receiving end of an aggressive country, how would we react? Let's also say that on a comparative scale, we were the little guy. There is no doubt in my mind that we would fight as hard, or harder, than we did when fighting to become a nation. So, maybe it's time to rethink the way we do business in other's business.

Make no mistake, I'm 100% for protecting the US and having a shared involvement in world affairs. I'm not in favor of destroying an infrastructure, then spending billions using our "apology though rebuild" policy.

Pentagon's Active Denial System (ADS)

The Active Denial System (ADS) developed by Raytheon for the US Air Force Research Labs is a non lethal, counter-personnel directed energy non-lethal weapon which can be used against human targets at distances beyond the effective range of small arms. ADS projects a focused millimeter wave energy beam which induces intolerable heating sensation on an adversary's skin and cause that individual to be repelled without injury. ADS could be used to stop, deter and repel hostile elements without applying of lethal force.
ADS was developed by Raytheon company for the US Air Force Research Laboratory (ARL) and DOD Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate. The program is currently in Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator (ACTD) phase, which is scheduled to continue through the end of 2005. ADS will be operated from HMMWV, equipped with adequate power sources. Another application of ADS is considered for airborne applications, from platforms such as the AC-130 gunship. The development program will use more powerful and lightweight version of the land based system. This project is scheduled to continue through 2008.
As of January 2007, the system has entered extended user evaluation phase, and is currently deployed with the Air Force's 820th Security Forces Group (SFG) at Moody air force base in Georgia, USA. 820 is the first unit selected to conduct these tests. The system will be evaluated in assisting troops in securing base perimeters, checkpoints and entry control points during peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance, and crowd dispersal.

The Spin Doctors

I don't know if this is true, but it's funny, typical "Washington speak", and proves that a good PR machine is priceless. Judy Wallman, a professional genealogical researcher, discovered that Hillary Clinton's great-great uncle, Remus Rodham, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture is this inscription:

"Remus Rodham; horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889."
Judy e-mailed Hillary Clinton for comments. Hillary's staff of professional spin doctors sent back the following biographical sketch:

"Remus Rodham was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."

And THAT is how it's done.

Obama: Menace or Messiah

Waiting outside in a long line of faces for your chance to see a piece of history in the making. Inside, the screaming, the tears, the cheering, and even the occasional fainting. Thirty years ago I would have thought of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, maybe a Billy Graham revival. Today it's a Barack Obama rally. There's a new Messiah in town. In an incredibly short amount of time, amidst freezing temperatures, rain or shine, he has become the mailman of hope for a new generation. He is an attractive, eloquent man with a vision. Sound familiar?

As a lifelong "registered" Republican, I have to admit my attention has been gotten. Now the hard part - wading through the political mire to a clear and sound judgement call on the November shore. Make no mistake, both sides offer the same challenge. Do I go with the tried and hardened workhorse that has brought us to our current state, or is it time for a political tsunami to hit Washington? The unfortunate truth is that at this stage of the game, no one man is going to change the course of a river that is so long and runs so deep, which brings to bear my next quandry.

Too many fingers in the old pie - old pie being the McCain camp. A lifetime of service in the Washington politico. Tough to unshake all those hands. I will give credit where credit's due though. He brings new meaning to blindsiding your opponent. In the last two weeks he has also reminded us that cronyism is alive and well. Endorsements galore from the B-12 network.

So, an old familiar musty wind, or a chance for a new and vibrant future. Caveat Emptor: Do your homework: 4 to 8 years is a long time to live with bad choices this big.
